BJP threatens agitation on minority reservation

Faizabad, Fri, 13 Jan 2012 ANI

Faizabad, Jan 13 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vinay Katiyar has slammed the Congress party for raking up the issue of minority reservations ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.

Katiyar said that his party had always been against religious reservations and declared that BJP would take to the streets to protest this move.

"The Congress party does not want anyone to be happy and remain peaceful. The Bharatiya Janata Party has always opposed to reservations on the grounds of religion. That is why we have decided that we would stage a sit-in protest in the state," Katiyar told the media here on Thursday.

He further urged the election commission of India to ban the Congress party for playing divisive politics.

"The election commission should ban the Congress party immediately. It should stop them from contesting elections. Such divisive announcements cannot be made during the election season. This is not a development-related announcement, it is infact something that will divide the nation," added Katiyar.

On Monday, Khurshid had promised to raise reservation as against the existing quota of 4.5 percent reserved for groups bracketed under other backward classes, if his party is elected to Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.Following the statement by Khurshid , the BJP has been criticising the Congress party for such assurances of increase in Muslim reservation right ahead of the polls.

Uttar Pradesh elections, spread through a seven phase polling in the months of February and March are seen as an opportunity for Congress party to re-establish a foothold in its erstwhile political base in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.Uttar Pradesh will elect a new 403-member state assembly in March, and the poll results are expected to broadly indicate trends for 2014 general elections.
