Nitish blames Congress for high level of malnutrition

Patna, Wed, 11 Jan 2012 ANI

Patna, Jan 11 (ANI): Slamming the Congress Party for a rise in malnutrition in the country, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday said that it is unfortunate for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to accept prevailing situation.

"It is unfortunate that the Prime Minster of India had to say and accept this. After independence, Congress has been in power for most of the time. The government has been in favour of the Congress or the government has worked with the support of the Congress. There can be nothing more catastrophic than this situation that after so many years of independence, they have to say things like this. These issues will be resolved not through words but through actions after carefully understanding each and every situation," Kumar told media here.

On Tuesday, Manmohan Singh said the problem of malnutrition is a matter of national shame.

"As I have said earlier, and I repeat that, the problem of malnutrition is a matter of national shame. Despite impressive growth in our GDP, the level of under-nutrition in the country is unacceptably high. We have also not succeeded in reducing this rate fast enough," he added.

Meanwhile, lashing out at the comments made by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray that migrants don't learn unless they are beaten, Kumar asserted that the remark has strategically been used for remain in the limelight to ensure victory in the forthcoming elections.

"As the elections are approaching these types of remarks are common, as they have this habit and want to remain in the limelight and take advantage of it in the in elections. Whatever they speak, they have support of the Congress. The congress doesn't take any action against them, although there is a provision in the legal system. They do it purposely," he said.

Kumar further asserted that there is a strong need to arrange necessary funds and the government of every state should be encouraged to initiate more schemes.

"Earlier, there was only APL (Above Poverty Line) and BPL (Below Poverty Line) but now, they have divided BPL into two and they have not decided about its parameters. I always assert that an independent body should be formed for giving representation, and for this, there is a need for funds," he said.

"Instead of arranging for funds, they are relying on the state governments, as these governments themselves don't have enough funds. The initiatives should be taken in an honest manner. We appeal Prime Minister that they should take initiatives in a fair manner and should trust state governments. They should be encouraged to make schemes after understanding the ground realities in states and should arrange funds for this," he added. (ANI)
