Rushdie visa row: Law must take its own course, says Khurshid

New Delhi, Tue, 10 Jan 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Jan 10 (ANI): With the Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband urging the Central Government to cancel Salman Rushdie's visa, Union Law and Justice Minister Salman Khurshid on Tuesday said all those worried about the forthcoming visit of the acclaimed author must take the course of law and put their views forward.

"Why should the Congress stop? There is law in the country. And if law permits, there must be a ban. But whatever is done, it should be done as per the law. We cannot do anything beyond law," said Khurshid, when asked to comment on Darul Uloom Deoband's demands to cancel Rushdie's visa.

"So, those people who are worried and think that some steps should be taken in this regard, they may take the course of law and put their views forward," he added.

The Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband had earlier on Monday raised objections to Salman Rushdie's proposed visit to Jaipur for the Literary Festival, and said that the Booker-Prize winning author should not be allowed on Indian soil because he has 'hurt the sentiments of Muslims the world over'.

65-year-old Rushdie is scheduled to attend the Jaipur Literature Festival from January 20 to 24.

It may be recalled that Rushdie's fourth novel, The Satanic Verses (1988), was at the centre of a major controversy, drawing protests from Muslims in several countries. (ANI)
