Gurgaon Police casts aspersion on woman's character to hide its failure: Y4D

Gurgaon, Fri, 06 Jan 2012 ANI

Gurgaon, Jan 6 (ANI): The Gurgaon police remained a mute spectator to the molestation of a woman on the New Year's eve between Sahara and Metropolitan malls in Gurgaon, according to the report of the fact finding team set up by Youth 4 Democracy (Y4D), an organization committed to fighting for peoples' rights.

The mayhem caused by a bunch of revellers outside Sahara Mall on Demeber 31, 2011. The policed has so filed only one FIR against unknown persons for obstructing public servants from carrying out their duty.

Eyewitnesses said the bid to abduct and molest only one woman, which has been reported till now, was just the tip of the iceberg. They recalled many similar horror stories.

The Y4D found that the police only came into action and resorted to lathi-charge after stones thrown by the mob hit them. However, the police did not bother to apprehend any culprit or find out details from the victim.

An eyewitness told the fact-finding team that the police kept watching more than a dozen youths molesting the woman. The police had registered an FIR and touting it as an example of their sincerity.

However, issues such as the failure to seal the area and nab the culprits had no answer. And what is more worrying that the police also did not get the details of the woman who was molested.

To cover up their failure on New Year's eve, the report highlights that the police is also trying to cast aspersion on the character of the woman by hinting that the victim was alone and the person with her was just incidental.

Rajpal, Sub-Inspector, of Gurgaon's Sector 29 Police Station, cast aspersions on the character of the victim with the words "woh bhii aisii hii thii".

"The man and the victim were not a couple but the guy was just hanging around," Rajpal told Y4D team.

Rajpal further claimed that identification has become a tall order as the suspects are not likely to be residents of the region but must have visited the spot to celebrate the New Year's eve.

Taking a strong exception to such an attitude of the police, the Y4D demanded speedy action in the case.

"The police get success where it wants even by drawing sketch of the criminals. In this case the whole footage is available and there is no reason for inability to trace the perpetrators of the incident," it said in a statement.

"We demand that the Gurgaon police should act fast and nab the culprits immediately. The larger society must feel that the police are their protectors and not the ones who would hide the criminals under one or other alibis," Y4d said.

Y4D has decided to use its network and provide full help to the police. (ANI)
