Rahul slams BJP for obstructing Lokpal Bill

Saharanpur , Fri, 30 Dec 2011 ANI

Saharanpur, Dec 30 (ANI): During his election tour of Uttar Pradesh, Congress General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for' intentionally blocking ' the passage of a strong and efficient ombudsman bill in the Parliament.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned at midnight on Thursday after extended debate on the ombudsman bill all day.

With the government's draft already being cleared in the Lok Sabha by a voice vote, the Bill faced over 100 amendments in the Rajya Sabha, where the Congress party failed to get a majority.

Amidst the uproar, led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Samajwadi Party (SP) members , the house was adjourned by Vice-President Hamid Ansari declaring that the debate had reached an impasse.

While addressing his supporters in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur District on Friday, Rahul reiterated his suggestion of granting a Constitutional status to the ombudsman similar to the Election Commission, autonomous and independent.

"Those people who talked about 'India Shining' disrupted a strong Lokpal Bill to be passed in the Parliament. While addressing the Parliament I had stated that the most efficient Lokpal Bill would be a Constitutional Lokpal, similar to the election commission, cent percent independent," said Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi, who is on an extensive tour of Uttar Pradesh, continued to target Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief, Mayawati by terming her administration as corrupt and her party insignia of an elephant hogging the money allotted for public schemes.

The Uttar Pradesh state elections spread through a seven phase polling in the months of February and March, 2012 are seen as an opportunity for India's ruling Congress party to re-establish foothold in its erstwhile political base in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.

Mayawati and the BSP came to power in Uttar Pradesh with an overwhelming majority in the 2007 assembly elections.

However, in the past few months, she has faced criticism for extravagant birthday celebrations and for building parks with plethora of massive statues of Dalit icons and leaders including herself. (ANI)
