Jharkhand youth take up turmeric farming to prevent being drawn to Maoists

Jamshedpur, Sat, 24 Dec 2011 ANI

Jamshedpur, Dec 24 (ANI): Young villagers from Raisindri village in Jharkhand's Jamshedpur District have taken to turmeric cultivation to avoid being lured by Maoist propaganda.

Earlier, unemployed youth were drawn to Maoist groups, but thanks to the Jharkhand Jangal Bachao Andolan's initiative they have been trained in turmeric cultivation and earning a decent livelihood.

Gopal Singh Munda, a resident of Raisindri village said the cultivation of turmeric was a welcome development.

"The turmeric gets ready in the month of December. We plough the field lightly after harvesting. We then grind turmeric in a traditional grinder. Then again we dry the turmeric roots again. After that we again grind it. Then finally it gets ready and we dry it again," said Munda.

Munda further added that the Jharkhand Jangal Bacho Andolan helped them earn profit by properly advertising their produce.

Due to the Maoist threats, development work in various districts of the state has been adversely affected.

It is believed that such sustained development methods adopted by the people of rural area would contribute to removing Maoism. (ANI)
