Paikmal, Dec 7 (ANI): A group of Maoists torched a truck during their call for a weeklong shutdown to mark the anniversary of People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) in Paikmal block of Bargarh District in Orissa.
This incident took place during the early on Tuesday.
Maoists claimed responsibility for the incident through a letter that they left pasted on a tree felled by them.
Truck driver Bhajana Dandasena recalled the shocking incident and complained that nobody came forth to rescue him till dawn.
"We did not know anything. When we reached here the Maoists told us to get down from the truck and asked us to keep quiet. Then, they set the truck on fire and asked us to leave," said Dandasena.
The truck driver also exposed about the police's reluctance to help, as they did not allow the fire brigade to reach the spot to douse the fire.
"We had informed the police and the fire brigade, but the police did not give clearance to the fire brigade to come at night. When they reached here, the truck was burnt," he added.
The PLGA's shutdown call comes after the extremists declared a two-day nationwide shutdown in protest against the killing of their top leader Kishenji on November 25.
Security forces had gunned down Kishenji and his close associates in the forests of Jangalmahal region in Paschimi Medinipur District in West Bengal.
The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of poor peasants and landless labourers and blame the Indian Government for not taking adequate steps to protect the poor tribal people.
Through threats and acts of violence, the ultras have been able to wield their influence in the mineral-rich belts of 22 states.
The government has described the Maoist movement as India's biggest threat to internal security. (ANI)
