Humanity still shivers when recalling 26/11 Mumbai attacks: Modi

Ahmedabad, Nov.26 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that humanity could not forget 26/11 ever, and added that measures should be taken to improve maritime security to avert such attacks in the future.

Addressing media here on the sidelines of a seminar on maritime security, Modi said the attacks were diabolic and tragic, and impossible to forget.

"Today is 26/11. Humanity (Humanitarian forces) starts shivering while recalling this date. No one can forget the attacks on India, which occurred three years back," he said.

Modi highlighted the need to prevent more such attacks, wherein, the militants enter our territory via the sea route and disrupt the peace and tranquillity.

He added that such attacks would prove to be an impediment to the economic growth.

"We do not want that any such happenings to occur in the sea, which create troubles for India's journey to economic development. At the same time, we also do not want militants to enter our territory through sea routes. It is very important to discuss these issues in detail," he said.

India had levelled charges against 38 people in connection with the killings, most of them living in Pakistan. The charge sheet ran to some 11,000 pages and the prosecution examined more than 650 witnesses.

Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving militant from the group of attacking militants, was sentenced to death for waging war against India.

Seven members of militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) are on trial in Pakistan for planning and orchestrating the violence that renewed tensions between the two rivals.

Peace talks between the two nations collapsed in the wake of the Mumbai attacks. The talks resumed in February 2011.

Recently the prime ministers of both India and Pakistan met on the sidelines of the recently concluded South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit with an aim to amicably resolve all the contentious issues.

Described as one of the bloodiest militant assault on Indian soil, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, lasted for two days and three nights.

The National Security Guard commandos brought the siege to an end. The attack claimed the lives of 166 people and nine out of the ten militants.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Taj Hotel, Hotel Trident, a hospital, the Leopold caf? and Nariman House were among the 10 targeted sites.

Security experts claim the ten conspirators of the Pakistan-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Taiba landed on Mumbai's shores by boat at sunset on November 26 and fired indiscriminately.

The breach then raised questions about the Indian marine security system. (ANI)
