Congress condemns attack on Pawar, raps up BJP for making provoking statements

New Delhi, Thu, 24 Nov 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Nov. 24 (ANI): Describing the attack on Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar as most unfortunate, the Congress Party on Thursday said that was more unfortunate was the fact that a nationally recognised party like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) issuing statements through their spokesmen and leaders justifying the general public's anger and actions on issues such as inflation and black money etc.

Party spokesman Rashid Alvi said: "Whatever has happened, it is very unfortunate, that boy should have been arrested. The investigating agency should try to find out the truth. What is even more unfortunate is major political parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party making statements through its spokespersons and leaders, warning that the public is justified in coming out onto the streets, shouting slogans, attacking politicians, leaders on issues such as price rise etc. These statements, I feel, are responsible for this (incident) happening.

Meanwhile, BJP lawmaker Smriti Irani condemning the act said that the people of the country can put across their points of view through plain and simple words in a democracy.

"No act of violence should be supported in any way whatsoever. This is a democracy where people can put across their points of view through plain and simple words, seek a formative action from the government on the assurances given. And, I would feel that as a serving Member of Parliament, or as a normal citizen, I would not support any kind of violent action," said Irani, who heads the BJP's women's wing

Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Gurudas Dasgupta also condemned the attack on Pawar, and termed the incident to be anti-democracy.

"We strongly condemn this incidence .To slap anyone is beyond decency and is anti democracy. This is not to be accepted and intolerable. Such things will not be allowed in a civilized society," said Dasgupta.

The man Harvinder Singh, who attempted to assault Sharad Pawar at the NDMC auditorium in New Delhi, was later taken into custody by the security guards at the scene. The man is currently in custody of the Delhi Police, who are questioning him.

Harvinder Singh, a resident of Rohini, is the same. man who had assaulted former telecom minister Sukh Ram last Saturday.

"These politicians have been causing nothing but trouble in the country. They only know how to make speeches but never act on what they say. They deserve to be attacked. I will continue to attack politicians. I am the same person who attacked Sukhram last week and I will continue doing this. I do not regret any of my actions," he said, claiming that Sharad Pawar is responsible for the misery of the people and the high prices of essential commodities (ANI)
