15 things a diabetic patient must always keep

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder and it has become increasingly common off late. Keeping a check on the health and taking necessary precautions is very important to lead a normal life.

Below are the 15 things you should always keep with yourself, which may be of use in worst circumstances.
Insulin: Some diabetic patients are advised a regular insulin intake by the doctors by the means of insulin injections. One can take insulin by self or with someone else’ help. Insulin injections, pumps and insulin pens are available. Take doctor’s advice before deciding on the best option for you.

Glucagon emergency kit: People who use insulin must have the Glucagon emergency kit with them always. A patient may suffer from the onset of hypoglecemia due to which he may pass out. In such a scenario, having a Glucagon emergency kit proves to be very useful.

A bottle of orange juice is advised in case the sugar drops of the patient drops below the normal level. The juice can be fed to the patient if he or she has a sudden diabetic seizure.

Orange juice can also be carried in the tube of orange in case the patient is passed out and thus cannot drink the juice.

Diabetic identification card: It is very important to keep a diabetic identification card or a note from your doctor duly signed by him that tells that you have diabetes.

It helps in the sense that if and when you get a sudden onset of hypoglycemia, your diabetic card will help in letting people around you know your condition properly and help you accordingly, particularly if there is a doctor around.

During a journey, carry snacks: while on a long journey, our meals may often get delayed. So it is advised to keep snacks with you so that body gets the necessary intake.

Testing device like Glucose meter: a diabetic patient experiences fluctuation in the sugar and glucose levels of the blood. The patient thus needs to keep a check on the levels. Monitoring it very important and can be done with the help of glucose meter.

Choose a glucose meter very carefully. Some parameters to keep in mind before choosing a glucose meter should be:
Accuracy
User-friendliness
Amount of blood it needs to run the test
How much pain you need to undergo while using this device

Ketone strips: Keeping a check on ketones is extremely important. The unusually increased amount of ketones in the blood can cause coma or worse, even death of patient.

So make sure, you do not ignore this fact and take necessary precautions. In order to constantly monitor ketones, always keep the ketone strips with you.

In long journeys, make sure you stretch your legs and walk around

Diet chart: Knowing what to eat and what not to eat is arguably the most important thing for a diabetic patient.

Try to stay away from oily and fatty food items that cause the sugar level in the blood to rise. Keep fruits with you.

Food packed with nutrients: a Balanced diet with all the necessary nutrients is a must. Foods like fish, cabbage, carrots and almonds are considered helpful for a diabetic patient.

A proper dental care set: the increased sugar levels of the blood also cause problems in teeth like oral cavity and other gum diseases.

So ensure you have a proper toothbrush, toothpaste advised by doctor and you keep your gums and teeth clean.

Prescribed medication: a proper medication advised by the doctor is a necessity. One needs proper dosage of medication as per the doctor’s instructions. Particularly during travelling, one should ensure that he does not fall short of any pill when required.

Sugar candies: This is the safest and to an extent effective way to fight the fluctuations in the sugar level of the blood. The sudden drop in sugar level can be neutralized by popping a sugar candy.

A proper footwear: A well designed footwear that fits well should be used. An ill fitted footwear causes pressure at certain points that can cause ulcers. This can prove very damaging to a diabetic patient. So ensure that you are wearing appropriate footwear.
Glucose tablets: Along with the insulin injections and orange juice, carrying glucose tablets is very beneficial. These are easy to carry and immediately fulfil the glucose need of the body to optimum level.

Consult your doctor before you buy them. Number of tablets and the time between two tablets may vary from patient to patient.

Herbs: You can also keep some herbs with you that can be taken with fruit juices. Amla or clover seeds are very useful in fighting some diabetic symptoms.

Be in touch with Doctor: Being in contact with your doctor is highly recommended when you are travelling between different time zones. Different time zones require modifications in the medication you are taking in terms of number of doses, how big or small a dose should be. Thus, a call to doctor can clear your doubts.
