National, Mon, 06 Oct 2008 IANS

Lucknow, Oct 3 (IANS) Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh police jointly conducted a raid in Sanjarpur village of Azamgarh district Friday morning in search of a terror suspect but returned empty handed.

The team was looking for Abu Rashid, a native of the village who is suspected to be involved in the serial blasts in Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Delhi and is alleged to be a member of the terror group Indian Mujahideen.

Mumbai Police's crime branch and the anti terrorist squad (ATS) of the Uttar Pradesh police took part in the raid in Sanjarpur, about 270 km from the state capital.

'Police questioned Rashid's father Mohammad Eklakh. However, no one was arrested and nothing objectionable was recovered from his house,' Azamgarh Superintendent of Police Ramit Sharma told IANS on phone.

According to Mumbai Police, Rashid has been named by five alleged Indian Mujahideen terrorists who were arrested in Mumbai a fortnight ago.

'Besides the recent serial blasts, Rashid, along with the other five, is also suspected to be involved in a number of blasts in the country since 2005,' Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police, Mumbai, told reporters there.

On Sep 23, a joint team of the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Police also raided the village in search of five terror suspects. They seized some banned literature and documents, but did not arrest anyone.
