Advani slams Chidamabaram on Telangana issue

Nizamabad, Wed, 19 Oct 2011 ANI

Nizamabad, Oct 19 (ANI): Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani has said the words of the central government on the Telangana issue cannot be trusted.

"I just believe that nobody can trust the words of this government, the government cannot be trusted at all. Two years before, they promised the people of Telangana that they were proceeding in the development of Telangana. Home Minister announced in the Parliament and after that he cheated people and went back on his words and till date he has not done anything in this issue. In the history of India, I don't remember that if any state has conducted such a long protest like this state has done," Addressing told a rally in Nizamabad

Advani said he and his party would certainly persuade the central government to pass the Telangana Bill, which has been pending for years in the Winter Session of Parliament.

"I just want to appeal to the people and the youth of Telangana that my party (BJP) will put pressure on the government over the Telangana issue in the Winter Session of the Parliament. Bharatiya Janata Party will give its full support over the issue and would try to pass the bill of Telangana in the Parliament," he added

He also said that the youth are committing suicide was due to the "anger over being betrayed over the separate statehood promise".

Pointing to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi's (TRS) by-election victory, Advani said the government could not delay the formation of the Telangana state anymore.

Pro-Telangana activists have stepped up their efforts for the four-decade-old demand of a separate state, which is sought to be carved out of the economically less developed parts of Andhra Pradesh.

The struggle gathered momentum last year after the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government had accepted their demand in principle.

Several protests and shutdowns had brought Andhra Pradesh to a near halt in 2009 and 2010, as pro-Telangana activists persisted with their demand. (ANI)
