Suspended Gujarat cadre IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt gets bail

Ahmedabad, Mon, 17 Oct 2011 ANI

Ahmedabad, Oct 17 (ANI): A sessions court in Ahmedabad on Monday granted bail to Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sanjeev Bhatt, who was arrested for allegedly forcing his subordinate to file a false affidavit against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, implicating him in the 2002 Godhra riots.

Session Judge V K Vyas granted bail on the condition that Bhatt would cooperate with the investigation and would remain present when called for.

Bhatt had earlier moved bail application on October 3, which was opposed by the state government.

Bhatt, who had accused Narendra Modi of misusing the State machinery during the post-Godhra riots, was arrested on September 30.

He was arrested on a complaint filed by constable K.D. Pant, who worked as a subordinate with Bhatt in the state Intelligence Bureau.

According to Pant's complaint, Bhatt had forced him to file an affidavit in which Modi had been named.

Bhatt has been locked in a public confrontation with Modi after he had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court accusing the Chief Minister of complicity in the 2002 riots. (ANI)
