Ailing tiger dies in Nainital Zoo

Nainital, Sat, 17 Sep 2011 ANI

Nainital, Sep.17 (ANI): A tiger has died at the G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo in Nainital, Uttarakhand, on Friday.

Authorities said that the tiger was brought to the zoo in a poor state of health with over 20-25 wounds on its body caused by maggots.

Dr. L.K. Sanwal said that the tiger had not eaten any food for over a week before being brought to the hospital and added that it never responded to treatment.

Tigers are fiercely territorial, and often injure each other grievously in their fight for territory. The Corbett Tiger Reserve recorded 219 tigers in the 2011 tiger census, a rise of 55 from the previous figure of 164. This corresponds with a rise of 295 in the national tiger population, which has risen to 1706 from the earlier figure of 1411.

This increase in numbers, coupled with the limited available forest area, triggers a conflict for territory between the big cats. (ANI)
