New Delhi, Sep 9: Addressing a news conference here today, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi rebutted opposition claims of him and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh undermining democracy by claiming that the Asom Gana Parishad has done nothing to strengthen India-Bangladesh relations.
Gogoi said; "When a party is in opposition, they will criticize but my question is that what did BJP and AGP did to recover the lands with Bangladesh. Why did they not take up the land issue with the Bangladesh government that belonged to India? They were sleeping all along."
The opposition has launched a series of protests in Assam after the Prime Minister during his recent visit to Dhaka signed the protocol to the 1974 land boundary demarcation between the two countries was also signed.
"AGP has been criticizing me. There was an Assam accord and also fencing on the international border, my question is that why did they accept it as the boundary area. All of a sudden they have woken up after 25 years. Why did Praffula Mahanta not take up the issue earlier with the government."
Gogoi further added that Prafulla Kumar Mahanata did not do anything for the welfare of the border areas. No school. Roads, or other basic amenities were developed for the people living there. Whatever they are doing it is politics and let them do what they want to do."
During the two-day visit of PM Manmohan Singh to Dhaka several bilateral agreements were signed of which one was for settling the outstanding issues of non-demarcated boundary in several areas of Northeast region.
These areas include undemarcated land boundary in three sectors, Daikhata-56 (West Bengal), Muhuri River-Belonia (Tripura) and Dumabari (Assam). The undemarcated boundary in all three segments has now been demarcated. The status of 111 Indian enclaves in Bangladesh with a population of 37,334 and 51 Bangladesh enclaves in India with a population of 14,215 has been addressed.
The issue of Adversely Possessed Lands along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam has also been mutually finalised.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said," We want our relations with the neighbors to improve and it is in our own interest to see our neighbors also advance"
AGP had earlier called Gogoi's party to be spineless and burnt effigies of Singh and chief minister Tarun Gogoi in protest against the pact between the two nations. By Devesh Gupta (ANI)
