Support for Anna shows no signs of dwindling on day seven

Kanpur/Amritsar/Keonjhar/Ranchi , Mon, 22 Aug 2011 ANI

Kanpur/Amritsar/Keonjhar/Ranchi, Aug 22 (ANI): People from all walks of life came out in support of veteran social activist Anna Hazare, whose fast for a strong Lokpal Bill entered the seventh day on Monday.

With Hazare's campaign gaining steam, his supporters have come up with new and innovative ways to step up pressure on the Centre to accept the demand of the 74-year-old social activist.

Singing patriotic songs, the highly charged supporters of Hazare staged protests outside the residence of their lawmaker Raja Ram Pal in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur city, saying this Bill is the demand of the common man and not any party in personal.

"On 15th August Prime Minister in his speech at the Red Fort said that demonstrations and hunger strikes would not lead to any solutions. We want to wake up this Congress Party that through these protests and hunger strikes, Mahatma Gandhi forced the British to leave India. So, these lawmakers have forgotten this fact," said Omendra Bharat, a supporter of Hazare.

"Anna Hazare has not started this hunger strike just like that; he has followed the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi. The government is trying to portray that the demand of Lokpal Bill is of the Bharatiya Janata Party of people the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) for some political ambitions, but it is the demand of a common man," he added.

Meanwhile, the members of Hazare led organisation India Against Corruption (IAC) marched on the streets in Punjab's Amritsar city shouting anti-government slogans and distributed pamphlets to persuade people to join the anti-corruption movement.

"The government's draft of the Lokpal Bill is for deceiving people and the government is misleading people. We are distributing the comparison chart between the government's Lokpal Bill and the Jan Lokpal Bill, amongst people, we are distributing stickers to people and are holding a rally at the Jallianwala Bagh. We will go to Manish Tiwari's (Congress spokesperson) house in Ludhiana," said Barinder Singh, an IAC member.

"Through street plays, we will inform people about the differences between the government's bill and the civil society's bill and will request the government not to deceive the common man. The corruption is rampantly prevailing in the country and you have to control it because we have voted you and send to the Parliament, so do not cheat people and pass the bill soon," he added.

Hazare's supporters on Orissa's Keonjhar District conducted a Hindu fire ritual, praying for the well-being and inner strength of the veteran social activist.

"This prayer has been done for the good health of Anna Hazare and India should be corruption free and poverty ridden soon. The poor people should get justice properly," said Dielab Mishra, a supporter of Hazare.

Meanwhile, Hazare's supporters in Jharkhand's Ranchi city staged a protest outsider the residence of their lawmaker Subodh Kant Sahay and urged him to make a public statement endorsing the Lokpal Bill.

"We have gathered here to urge our lawmaker (Subodh Kant Sahay) to make a public statement endorsing the Ombudsman Bill and table the legislation as a private member in the parliament. If not, then we will use our right to recall, we voted for you, but now we recall our votes. Please resign immediately," said Arvind Mishra, a protestor. (ANI)
