Protests in Anna's village after his arrest

Ralegan Siddhi, Aug 16 (ANI): People in social activist Anna Hazare's village in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar District on Tuesday protested against his arrest in Delhi.

Condemning the arrest, many villagers including women and children marched to the local Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus depot and raised slogans against the government.

Jaisingh Mahapari, a villager, said that the whole village supported the movement led by Hazare and that they were ready to get arrested by the police.

"We were supposed to go on fast today. But Anna has been arrested. This is why the whole village has come on road. Our animals, our children and all of us have come on roads. The police can take all of us into custody. But they should take our animals as well. Anna Hazare has asked us to follow the Gandhian path. They (the police) can arrest the whole village," said Mahapari.

Ralegan Siddhi was once an obscure village nestled in the hills of Maharashtra. It was dogged by poverty, illiteracy, water scarcity and illegal liquor dens.

After retiring from the army, Hazare returned home to correct the ills of the village. Four decades later, the lush village has become a model for sustainable development and government, illustrating the achievement of civil society and the failure of the state. (ANI)
