Prime Minister greets nation on Rakshabandhan

New Delhi , Fri, 12 Aug 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Aug 12 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has greeted the people of the country ahead of the auspicious occasion of Rakshabandhan.

In his message, Dr. Singh said that the festival fosters community bonding irrespective of caste or creed and highlights the importance of women in Indian society.

"The country needs to renew its commitment to a just society free of all prejudice. May the festival bring happiness and peace to all," the Prime Minister said.

The festival, which will be celebrated all across the country tomorrow, celebrates the relationship between brothers and sisters.

Rakshabandhan occupies a special place in the Hindu religious calendar.

The central ceremony involves the tying of a rakhi (sacred thread) by a sister on her brother's wrist. This symbolizes the sister's love and prayers for her brother's well being, and the brother's lifelong vow to protect her. (ANI)
