India, Pak must move on from the past: Salman Bashir

New Delhi , Wed, 27 Jul 2011 ANI

New Delhi, July 27 (ANI): Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir on Wednesday said India and Pakistan must move on from the past in order to ensure a peaceful co-existence between the two nations.

"We cannot be mired in the past and I think it's counter-productive to keep on coming back to a few phrases or a few words. I don't see the purpose of that because it is upto us how we see our future," Bashir told mediapersons here at a joint press conference with Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao.

Bashir also played down Pakistan's Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar's meeting with the Kashmiri separatist leaders in New Delhi after her arrival on Tuesday, saying the meeting should not be seen as against India's interests.

"You know you cannot attribute an individual's views to a state's views and it is important to keep that distinction in mind. Pakistan's position on several issues that are a part of consultations and discussions is well known and of course, whether it is the Hurriyat or Fai, our positions on these issues are well known. So, it should not be construed as anti-Indian propaganda," said Bashir.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao asserted that the two sides had worked on a mechanism to deal with issues related to counter terrorism.

"As far as counter terrorism cooperation is concerned, I would only like to draw your attention to discussions that have been held and are ongoing between the Home secretary and the Interior Secretary of both the countries," said Rao.

"There is a certain medium now that has been established for the exchange of views on matters concerning counter terrorism," she added.

The two diplomats addressed the mediapersons after the foreign ministerial-level talks between External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna and her Pakistani counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar. (ANI)
