Orissa priests campaign against police action during car festival

Puri , Sun, 10 Jul 2011 ANI

Puri, July 10 (ANI): Temple priests campaigned against police officials at Puri for baton charging them during the car festival of Hindu God Jagannath.

The priests demanded the government to take stringent action against those officials involved in the incident.

"The provincial government should come and speak to us otherwise they would be held responsible for what had happened during the chariot festival," said Ramachandra Das Mahapatra, a priest on Saturday.

"We have informed about it to the temple administration, district administration and also the police. Today, it is the seventh day but they have not listened to us yet," added another priest Harekrishna Pujapanda.

The state police baton charged priests earlier on July 4 for overcrowding near chariots during the car festival in Puri town, leaving around 20 temple servitors injured. (ANI)
