London, June 29 (ANI): French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde has been named as the new International Monetary Fund (IMF) Chief following the downfall of Dominique Strauss-Kahn for allegedly raping a hotel maid in New York.

Lagarde is the first woman to hold the post, and would resume her duty for a five-year term from July 5, The Guardian reports.

Following the announcement, she tweeted: "The results are in: I am honored and delighted the Board has entrusted me with the position of MD of the IMF!"

The US had officially endorsed her candidacy, with Treasury secretary Tim Geithner calling her an "exceptional talent" whose broad experience would "provide invaluable leadership for this indispensable institution at a critical time for the global economy".

British Chancellor George Osborne hailed her selection as 'good news for the global economy and for Britain'.

"She is the best person for the job, which is why Britain was one of the first countries to propose her. She has been a strong advocate for countries tackling high budget deficits and living within their means," she added.

Meanwhile, French President Nicolas Sarkozy described the appointment as a 'victory for France'.

After resigning over charges of trying to rape a hotel maid in New York, 62-year-old Strauss-Kahn had said that he believes that he was targeted by Russia and France to have him fired as the IMF chief, and to stop him from running for the French presidency.

He is currently in New York under house arrest, and undergoing trial over the case. (ANI)
