Manmohan Singh asks Chidambaram to see if Pak prisoner can be pardoned

New Delhi , Mon, 20 Jun 2011 ANI

New Delhi, June 20 (ANI): The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has asked Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to examine if the request of Supreme Court Judge Justice Markandey Katju for pardon to Pakistani prisoner Khalil Chishty could be considered on 'humanitarian' grounds.

Dr. Singh in his letter to Chidambaram said: "I shall be grateful if you could examine the request of Justice Katju to see if a pardon to Dr Khalil Chishty could be considered on humanitarian grounds."

Justice Markandey Katju of the Supreme Court has appealed to the Prime Minister to release the 80-year-old Pakistani national languishing in the Ajmer jail in Rajasthan on humanitarian grounds.

In an email sent to the Prime Minister through Congress MP Rajiv Shukla, Justice Katju said he was making this appeal, not as a judge but as a human being, for the release of Dr. Khalil Chishty, who is old and infirm, under Article 72 of the Constitution. (ANI)
