108-year-old prisoner walks out of jail, can hardly speak

Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), June 19 (ANI): Family members of Brij Bihari Pandey, 108, who is finally released from Gorakhpur district jail after being convicted along with 15 others for the murder in 1987 of four persons in Maharajganj over inheritance of a Hindu religious institution, are taking special care of him as he is unable to recognise his home and relatives and can barely hear and speak in monosyllables.

Avneesh, Bihari's son, along with two others had completed the bail formalities and secured his release from Gorakhpur's divisional jail.

"He has become very old now and cannot walk on his own. Since he has come out of the jail, so we are now taking proper care of him," said Vandana Mishra, granddaughter of 108-year-old Pandey.

After a trial lasting more than two decades, Brij Bihari Pandey was sentenced in 2009, but had to be frequently rushed to hospital and was mostly bed-ridden.

Pandey's grandson Munna said innocent people were charged under the murder case and the real culprits walked free.

"The sub inspector, Pooran Yadav has said that the firing started from the other side and then in self defence the people, from our side, attacked them with sticks and in that fight few people were killed. The killing of four people took place on June 15, 1987. In this case the real culprits never got punished but the innocents were put behind the bars," he said.

Pandey remained in hospital for most of the time during his jail stint. He could not be released as no one had turned up to complete the formalities, even after he was granted bail on May 26. (ANI)
