Sikh organisations support Bhullar's mercy petition

Amristar , Sat, 11 Jun 2011 ANI

Amritsar, June 11 (ANI): The Akal Takht and Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) on Saturday backed Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar, a pro-Khalistan militant, demanding review of his death sentence.

Bhullar's mother Upkar Kaur, along with members of the SGPC, offered prayers at the Golden Temple here for his well being.

Kaur said she has hopes of a positive development in the court's decision over Bhullar's death sentence.

"A mother always has a ray of hope. A mother cannot be disappointed. Whatever decision will pass, I would accept it. Today, I am standing in Golden Temple and whatever support I got from this Sikh Panth (Sikh body), I am happy with it," she said.

According to reports, the Sikh bodies have also appealed to the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, to take a lenient view in the case.

"I think, using false allegations, death sentence has been given to Bhullar and President (Pratibha Devisingh Patil) is also agreeing with it. We are trying to do something, to fight for our true rights. We will give a memorandum to Governor of Punjab on June 20 in this regard," said Avtar Singh Makkar, SGPC President.

The SGPC swung into action after President Pratibha Devisingh Patil last month rejected the mercy petition of Bhullar's death sentence.

Bhullar was sentenced to death by a trial court on August 25, 2001, for plotting terror attacks on Punjab SSP Sumedh Singh Saini in 1991 and the then Youth Congress President, M.S. Bitta, in 1993, leading to several deaths in Delhi. (ANI)
