Pachauri calls for immediate pollution control

New Delhi , Mon, 30 May 2011 ANI

New Delhi, May 30 (ANI): Expressing concern over rising pollution in India, R. K Pachauri, chairman of UN International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on Monday urged the public to minimise pollution, as the effects of global warming are looming large over the world.

Addressing the 'Sustainable Agriculture and Nutritional Security' seminar here, Pachauri said: "If we have to implement sustainable agriculture, then firstly, we have to control pollution. I urge the public to minimise pollution. "

He said traditional systems have to be re-invented, and research and development have to be promoted.

"I think we have to find a new system, new organizational structure by which we can promote research and development, by which we involve industry and by which we involve rural consumers who can customize renewable energy solutions," he added.

According to Pachauri, river pollution, especially in the Ganges, has increased by leaps and bounds in the last few years alone.

As India's economy is based on agriculture, he noted sustainability issues now pose serious challenges in the next phase of agricultural growth.

"We also have to ensure that not only the rich farmers benefit from this, but the poor farmers get equal benefits too, " said Pachauri. (ANI)
