Kolkata, May 10 (ANI): Around 85 percent polling was recorded in the sixth and last phase of West Bengal assembly polls in 14 constituencies on Tuesday.
The voting, which started at 7 a.m. and continued till 3 p.m., took place in Maoist-hit districts of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia, in which an electorate of over 26.57 lakh voters will decide the fate of 97 candidates.
Prominent candidates whose fate were sealed in the ballots include, Minister Sushanta Ghosh, Rabilal Moitra and leader of moist backed Peoples Committee Mr.Chatradhar Mahato who is contesting the election from jail as an independent candidate.
Tight security arrangements were made to ensure peaceful polling. Besides the 41 para-military companies permanently stationed in the three districts to tackle Maoists, 614 additional companies were deployed for the polls, in addition to state forces.
Over 3500 polling booths were set up in the three districts.
The border with Jharkhand and Orissa were sealed to prevent the entry of unwanted persons.
The Left Front has fielded candidates in 12 seats.The Trinamool Congress is contesting in nine seats, its ally Congress is fighting in four seats.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded candidates in all 14 seats.
Of the six phased elections in West Bengal, four were completed on April 18, 23, 27 May 3 and 7.
The counting of votes will be held on May 13. (ANI)
