Polling begins for second phase of panchayat polls in J-K

Srinagar, Apr 17 (ANI): Despite the killing of a woman candidate in Chrar-e-Sharief area of Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam District and the mounting militant threats, polling is underway in five blocks of the Valley for the second phase of panchayat polls.

 

It has been reported that the militants have issued boycott calls and threats against the polls.

 

A total of 2,139 candidates are in the fray in the second phase.

 

One block each in Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Kupwara and Budgam districts went for polls to elect panchs and sarpanchs amidst high security this morning.

 

Forty-year-old Hasina Begum was shot dead by ultras at Karpora in Pakherpora area last night.

 

Begum, who was affiliated to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, was rushed to the District Hospital Pulwama where she succumbed to injuries.

 

The panchayat polls are being held after the successful state assembly elections in 2008. The last panchayat elections were held in 2001. (ANI)
