Sri Lankan President to watch World Cup final in Mumbai

Colombo, Thu, 31 Mar 2011 ANI

Colombo, Mar 31 (ANI): President Mahinda Rajapaksa will watch the Sri Lankan cricket team take on India in the World Cup final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 2.

"The President will go to Mumbai to watch the final match. The President and his three sons were keen spectators on Tuesday night when Sri Lanka beat New Zealand to reach the final to meet India," Rajapaksa's spokesman Bandula Jayasekera told reporters."He (Rajapaksa) wants Sri Lanka to win the World Cup as a tribute to Muttiah Muralitharan who retires from international cricket after this World Cup," he added.

Sri Lanka have played four one-dayers at this venue, including a league match in this tournament against New Zealand.

Out of those four, they have won two and lost two.

Sri Lanka has been beaten India once and been defeated once in two World Cup encounters at this ground, in 1986-87 and 1996-97.

A total of 14 ODIs have been held at the Wankhede since the inaugural clash between India and Sri Lanka. (ANI)
