Keralites hail CM Achutanandan's decision to contest polls

Thiruvananthapuram , Mon, 21 Mar 2011 ANI

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 21 (ANI): Residents of Kerala's Palakkad District have welcomed Chief Minister VS Achutanandan's decision to contest the upcoming assembly polls.

"It was hard to believe when we came to know of Achutanandan not contesting this time. Bt now we are happy to hear of him contesting again from our region," said M. Keshavan, a local.

He said the constituency had got many benefits and witnessed many developments during Achutanandan's stint as state chief.

"In this constituency, he had initiated various developments. Earlier, in Karakkodu business area, which is under the Pudussery Gram Panchayat many industries were shut down, and a grave situation had arisen. The situation has changed completely now. New developments are happening here. New job opportunities are also coming up," said Suresh Kumar, a CPI (M) worker.

The CPI(M) had earlier asked the veteran leader to step back from the forthcoming assembly elections.

The CPI (M), which was under massive public pressure, on Friday reversed its decision and declared that the 87-year-old warhorse will contest from his Malampuzha seat in Palakkad District.

The CPI (M revoked its decision in the wake of widespread protests within the party and the general public over the issue.

Achuthanandan, who is one of the most prolific leaders of Kerala Politics, also made a dramatic come back to the electoral battle field in 2006 thwarting the moves of the rival faction led by Viajayan, which initially managed to keep him off the fray.

During the assembly elections held in Kerala in April-May 2006, Achuthanandan defeated Satheesan Pacheeni of the United Democratic Front by a margin of 20,017 votes in Malampuzha constituency in Palakkad district.

The polling for 140 assembly constituencies in Kerala will be held on April 13. (ANI)
