Israel Navy intercepts vessel smuggling illegal Iranian arms

New Delhi , Wed, 16 Mar 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Mar. 16 (ANI): The Government of Israel has confirmed intercepting and searching a merchant ship in which its naval forces discovered a cache of illegal Iranian arms intended for the use of terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip.

The merchant ship "Victoria" was headed for the Alexandria Port in Egypt and had departed from Lattakia Port in Syria on March 6 before stopping at Turkey's Mersin Port. It was sailing under the Liberian flag.

In a statement issued here, the Embassy of Israel said Iran is actively working to destabilize the region and is using recent political unrest to arm radical players in the region.

The statement urged the international community to take necessary steps to prevent arms smuggling to the Gaza Strip and illicit transfers of arms from Iran.

It said wide-scale cooperation on this issue was required, as this supply functions as the lifeline for terrorist organizations which aim to destabilize the region and weaken the moderate states. (ANI)
