WB polls: Security stepped up in Darjeeling

Darjeeling, Mar 13 (ANI): The administration has beefed up security measures here to prevent malpractices in the upcoming West Bengal assembly polls.

 

Security personnel have put up check-posts on inter-state roads connecting the States of Bihar and Sikkim, inspecting vehicles and frisking travellers.

 

The local administration has deployed extra companies of paramilitary forces to maintain law and order and ensure free and fair election.

 

"In the last one month, we have got 11 companies of paramilitary forces which are deployed mainly in hill areas. They are doing area domination, they are doing search and helping police in conducting raids at different places," said Devendra Pratap Singh, Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling.

 

"We are quiet hopeful that with the co-operation of everybody the election in Darjeeling will be peaceful free and fair," he added.

 

West Bengal faces state polls along with Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the Union Territory of Pondicherry.

 

The state will have elections in six phases. The first phase of voting will take place on April 18, second phase on April 23, third phase on April 27, fourth phase on May 3, fifth phase on May 7 and sixth phase on May 10. (ANI)
