India blanks Philippines (DELHI SPORTS)

The Indian team blanked Philippines 3-0 in the tennis Test between two countries played at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.

The Indian players Ashutosh Singh, Vishnu Vardhan and Divij Sharan proved too good for their challengers, as they didn’t face any difficulty to get past their opponents. The reigning National grass court champion Vishnu Vardhan outplayed the Johnny Arcilla 6-3, 6-4 followed by Divij Sharan who defeated Patrick John Tierro in straight sets. The Indians easily claimed the doubles then, which was restricted to a single set.

RESULTS: India beat Philippines 3-0 (Vishnu Vardhan bt Johnny Arcilla 6-3, 6-4; Divij Sharan bt Patrick John Tierro 6-1, 7-6(4); Ashutosh Singh and Divij Sharan bt Johnny Arcilla and Patrick John Tierro 7-6(2)).

Dhopade holds Ganguly

Tournament’s second seed Surya Shekhar Ganguly surprisingly held by compatriot young Swapnil Dhopade in Round 3 of the 6th Parsvnath International Open Chess played here.

The 18-year-old from Maharashtra stuck by his game and forced draw in the 48-move game. GM Abhijeet Gupta went down to Ram Prakash after a long-drawn 58-move game.

There are 27 players with the full three points, and that includes top seed Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, third seed Russian Igor Kursunov and Spaniard Elizbar Ubilava.

India's other hope Abhijeet Kunte is also part of the top pack. Another GM who had a bad second day was Vietnamese Nguyen Anh-dung. Indian FM Rishpal Singh held him.

Abhishek, Neha post wins

R. Abhishek of Indian Bank upset second seeded Soumyadeep Roy, the former National champion, in the first round in the men’s section and made it to the pre-quarterfinals of the National ranking North Zone table tennis championship here on Monday.

Delhi’s Neha Aggarwal got the better off Janhavi Deshpande 11-2, 11-6, 11-8, 12-10 to make it to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Neha has reached the semi-finals in the youth girls' category as well.

Harmeet Desai scripted another upset in the junior boys singles pre-quarter finals, as he accounted for second seed AR Navneeth of Karnataka 11-13, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-6.

Top seed Subhajit Saha was all smiles after he notched up a 11-8, 11-1, 11-7, 8-11, 11-3 victory over Tamil Nadu's Sivananda Seshadri. Mouma Das, top seed in the women's section, defeated Suomi Mondal 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 5-11, 11-4 to reach the semi-finals.

New Delhi Heroes in semis

Joe scored nine minutes before the final whistle as New Delhi Heroes registered a hard-fought 1-0 win against Shastri FC and made it to the semifinals in the SAIL-ONGC Delhi Soccer Association’s senior division open league championship played at the Ambedkar stadium here on Monday.

Shastri Club squandered an easy chance in the first half. It was left to Joe to bring in cheers in the 81st minute.

New Delhi Heroes finished its league engagements winning all four matches to top the group with 12 points. Shastri finished at the bottom with one point.

Indian National FC, Tarun Sangha and Ahbab Club are the others who have made it to the semifinals.

Selection trials for U-21

Trials to select the Delhi team for the National under-21 football championship will be held at the Ambedkar Stadium on Wednesday. The Nationals for Dutta Ray Trophy will be held at Madurai from February 1. Interested may report to the Delhi Soccer Association’s (DSA) Selection Committee Chairman, D.K. Bose or coach Ravi Rana, at the stadium.

Dharmender excels

A fine all-round display by Dharmender Sharma helped Hansraj Model School beat Achrekar cricket academy by 140 runs in the Jayanti Devi cricket tournament.

Brief scores: Hansraj 340/6 in 40 overs (Dharmender Sharma 113, Akhil Goyal 70) beat Achrekar 200 in 34 overs (Lovepreet Singh 70; Dharmender 4/11, Akhil Goyal 3/19).

Ramakant Academy post win

Fine bowling by Sahaj Gupta (4 for 24) and Simranjeet Singh's knock of 55 helped Ramakant Achrekar Academy beat Achievers Academy by seven wickets in the Shiv Dutt Tyagi memorial under-13 cricket tournament.
