Sudden Cardiac Arrest (Special on World Heart Day 2013)

September 29 is the annual world heart day and this year too, it is being observed across the globe with different themes. On the World Heart Day, several seminar, health check up camps and symposiums are being organised in India and abroad.

Heart ailments are being a leading cause of death in the world and India is moving towards heart disease capital due to rising number of cases. There are several types of heart diseases known in the medical terminology in which Sudden Caridac Arrest (SCA) is one.

The Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. If this happens, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs. SCA is not similar to heart attack as in heart attack the blood flowing muscle gets some abnormality.

SCA is a leading cause of death and account for greater than 50 percent of cardiovascular deaths in India. More than 660,000 deaths occur every year in India alone as a result of SCA.

Sudden Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency in which arrested blood circulation prevents delivery of oxygen into entire body. When the death occurs due to sudden SCA, the condition is called Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD).

There are clinically two types of cardiac arrest: shockable and non-shockable.

The reasons behind SCA are: Coronary heart disease, Non-ischemic heart disease and Non-cardiac ailments.

Prevention:

  1. Regular medical check-ups who has any heart ailements
  2. Control on High Blood Pressure
  3. Healthy diet
  4. Regular Exercise
  5. Avoid Smoking
  6. Controlling on bad Cholesterol
  7. Stress Management
  8. Control on respiratory disease
  9. Control on nephrological disease
  10. Avoid junk foods
