Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today declared open 'Hunar' World-class Skill Centre in its temporary campus at ITI Vivek Vihar. The Centre has been set up with collaboration of the Institute of Technical Education, Government of Singapore. Dikshit stated that her government is committed to make this Centre the best Skill Development Centre in the world. She further stated that the opening of the Centre has made a dream come true. This is in tune with Skill Development Program of the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh who has set the target of skilling 500 million people.

Delhi High Education Minister Dr. A.K. Walia, MLAs Dr. Narendra Nath and Naseeb Singh, Chief Secretary D.M. Spolia, Advisor to Prime Minister on Skill Development S. Ramadorai, Principal Secretary (PWD) Arun Baroka, Secretary (IT) Shri Rajendra Kumar, Secretary (Industries) Amit Yadav, Dy. Secretary, Government of Singapore Shri N. G. Cher Pong were present on this occasion.

Dikshit further stated that globalization and market forces are creating employment opportunities across countries on a scale never seen before. Unfortunately, there is also a widening skill gap as existing Skill Development System has not kept pace with the fast-changing demands of an increasingly complex and rapidly changing technology. As India moves progressively towards becoming a “Knowledge Economy”, it becomes increasingly important that its policies and programs should focus on advancement of skill and threes skills have to be relevant to the emerging economic environment.

To cope with this level of complexity the government has given a very high priority to address the challenge of skill development. At the state level, the government of Delhi has decided to address this issue through an ambitious project to develop a World Class Skill Centre.

Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Walia stated that the 37.01 acres land at Village Jonapur, South Delhi has been allotted to the department of Training and Technical Education. The construction shall start soon and the permanent huge campus shall be completed in two years
