Hollywood actress Eileen Brennan, who is best known for her stupendous roles in movies like The Last Picture Show, The Sting, Private Benjamin, and Clue died at 80 following bladder cancer on July 28 this Sunday.
Brennan's is admired for her memorable role as Doreen Lewis in Private Benjamin for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In addition to that, she was Brennan was nominated for seven times in Emmy Awards, which also includes her noted appearance in "Taxi," "Thirtysomething," "Newhart" and "Will & Grace." Moreover, Brennan was the first actress to be nominated for an Academy Award and Emmy Award for playing the same role.
Born as Verla Eileen Regina Brennen on September 3, 1932 in Los Angeles to Regina "Jeanne" Menehan, a silent film actress, and John Gerald Brennen, who was a doctor, Brennen was blessed with exceptional comic skills and ever alluring voice that made her a star after she played the title role of Rick Besoyan's off-Broadway tongue-in-cheek musical Little Mary Sunshine in 1959, which gave her Obie Award.
Later Brennen proved her mettle in acting by giving some memorable performances in movies like The Sting (1973), 1971 classic The Last Picture Show, 1974 adaptation of the Henry James novella Daisy Miller, The Cheap Detective, Clue, Murder by Death , The Cheap Detective (1978), Private Benjamin, Stella, Texasville, The Hollow and many other films.
In 1980, Brennan received Oscar nomination for best supporting actress for her role as Goldie Hawn's in Private Benjamin. Later, she did the same role in the television adaptation (1981-1983), which gave her an Emmy (supporting actress) as well as a Golden Globe (lead actress). In addition to that, she has one more Golden Globe nomination and six Emmy nominations.
