Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 Health Complications

Type 1 diabetes is classified as the non production of glucose regulating insulin hormone and poses great array of health risks, especially in children and younger people who are generally diagnosed with this type of diabetes. Here we introduce all types of diabetes mellitus Type 1 health complications.

When diabetes is referred as one of the gravest health challenges normally the focus remains on the Type 2 diabetes which make most people suffer, but Type 1 diabetes being less common compared to the Type 2 make millions of people suffer from an array of health complications. In case of Type 1 diabetes sometimes the health complications are far more acute and life threatening. Before relating here diabetes mellitus Type 1 health complications in detail let us have a look at the clinical basics concerning two types of diabetes.

Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 and Type 2

Diabetes is the medical condition when blood glucose is not absorbed by the body cells in normal metabolic process. Insulin is the hormone which is responsible for regulating blood glucose and directing them to body cells. In Type 1 diabetes the beta cells of pancreas stop producing insulin resulting in high level unconsumed blood glucose. On the other hand though pancreas produces insulin, the body cells become resistant to insulin and so the blood glucose cannot be regulated resulting in high level of blood sugar. While the diabetes mellitus Type 1 health complications are most challenging as medication needs to regulate blood glucose when the natural regulating agent called insulin is absent, in Type 2 diabetes the medication is mainly to deal with the body’s resistance to insulin.

Types of health complications in Type 1 diabetes mellitus

Heart disease and Hypertension: Diabetes directly affects your heart condition, especially in case of Type 1 diabetes. Diabetic condition enhances the risk of coronary heart disorder, angina, heart blockage, non-rhythmic heartbeat, chest pain, etc. There is a higher risk of high blood pressure or hypertension as well in diabetic patients.

Kidney damage: Blood vessels in the kidney perform the task of purifying blood by extracting the waste from our blood. Diabetes can damage this waste filtering system and can cause severe kidney problem leading to life threat.

Nerve damage and nervous disorder: Tiny blood vessels nourish our nerves and they are crucial for our sensitivity nerves in limbs, skin and other body parts, but these blood vessels can be damaged by excess sugar in the blood or acute diabetic condition leading to even permanent nervous failure or damage. This is the reason why diabetic patients run the greater risk of being paralytic or losing senses in body parts.

Blindness and Eye Damage: One of the most common diabetes mellitus Type 1 health complications is the greater risk of eyesight damage and blindness. The diabetic condition or high blood glucose level can cause damage to the blood vessels in the retina leading to poor eyesight and gradually to blindness.

Arthritis and joint pain: Diabetes is said to decrease the mineral density in the bone leading to orthopedic problems like osteoporosis, arthritis, joint pain etc.

Skin disorder: Diabetes causes increased susceptibility to various skin infections like fungal or bacterial infections leading to skin disorders.

Bad dental and oral health: In case of any diabetic condition including Type 1 diabetes, there is an increased risk of gum infection leading to damage of tooth and gums. As children are more vulnerable to Type 1 diabetes and poor oral care, the condition may be worse for them.

Sexual impotence: Due to poor blood circulation and nerve damage Type 1 diabetes may lead to sexual impotence in future.

Foot damage: One of the most common diabetes mellitus Type 1 health complications which is observed in patients at their younger age is damage to their foot. Poor muscle growth, weak foot and nervous insensitivity are common in such cases due to poor blood circulation. Any type of cuts and blisters also take unusually longer time to heal.
