Beijing, July 18 (IANS) An American woman was among two people stabbed to death by a knife-wielding man in Beijing, police said Thursday.
The attack occurred outside a shopping mall in the capital's Chaoyang district Wednesday evening, Xinhua reported.
The identity of the woman was not disclosed, but police said they were trying to contact her relatives. The other victim in the stabbing was a male Chinese.
The suspect, a 27-year-old man surnamed Xiao, was arrested in east China's Shandong province. His motive for the attack was not clear.
The suspect claimed he was mentally ill.
The unemployed man told police he arrived in Beijing in June, and that he always felt that "he was looked down upon by others".
Beijing police have contacted their counterparts in the suspect's home province to obtain more information about the man's medical history.
