Today is the 73rd anniversary of this great legendary music composer.
Born on June 27 to music composer Sachin Dev Burman and lyricist Meera Dev Burman he had music in his blood. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Salil Chowdhury and Samta Prasad trained Pancham Da.
Fans gave him the name Pancham Da
At the mere age of 9 he composed his first song - Aye meri topi palat ke aa. S.D. Burman used it in Funtoosh (1956).
Sar jo tera chakraaye the famous song of Guru Dutt's Pyasa was also composed by him as a child.
In the beginning he worked as music assistant. most of the time to his father. He worked as an assistant in Chalti Ka Naam Gadi, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Tere Ghar ke Samne, Bandini, Guide and Teen Devian.
Burman's first hit as a Music Director was Teesri Manzil in 1966
Hai Apna Dil To Awara in which Burman played mouth organ became a super hit over night. Padosan took him to extreme heights. RD and Kishore Kumar were a great pair. Dual give hits like Kati Patang - Yeh Shaam Mastani and Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai.
Who can forget classic Raina Beeti Jaaye.
He did a cameo in Mehmood's Bhoot Bangla in 1965.
Some of the films he worked in are: Bahron Ke Sapne, Pyar Ka Mausam and Yaadon Ki Baarat, Seeta aur Geeta, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Rampur ka Lakshman, Mere jeevan saathi, Bombay to Goa, Apna Desh, Parichay, Aap ki Kasam, Sholay, Aandhi, Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, Ghar, Gol Maal, Khubsoorat, Rocky, Satte Pe Satta and Love Story.
Asha Bhosle married RD Burman in 1980. She was RD's second wife, Rita Patel being the first with whom Pancham Da took divorce.
