Beijing, April 27 (IANS) A female student has shot off letters to the chiefs of China's top 500 enterprises to protest sexual discrimination at the work place, a media report said Friday.

Zheng Churan, a senior student at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong province, wants them to support equal employment and to lift the unfair demands and limits against female candidates, reported China Daily citing Beijing Times.

Zheng decided to write the letter as she was hunting for a job and realised that many enterprises advertised for "men only" or "women above 165 cm".

Firms assume women are distracted by family and can't focus on work, she said, adding that having children also adds to the company's cost.

"Companies impose more limit conditions on women than on men when choosing who to employ rather than selecting talent according to their abilities," she was quoted as saying.
