Electric fence to protect Wimbledon's grass surface

London , Thu, 26 Apr 2012 ANI

London, Apr 26 (ANI): The All England Club has taken taking every precaution possible to ensure their famous grass courts are in perfect condition for this summer's Wimbledon championship and London 2012 Olympic tennis tournament, including an electrified fence.

The courts at SW19 will see an unprecedented amount of play this summer with two major tournaments taking place during the summer with just three weeks between the two tournaments.

Former world number one Dinara Safina revealed the news about the fence via her Twitter page, where she posted a photo saying simply, "Don't touch it!!!!"

The Russian star said, "I thought it was a joke but it is electric and it is to stop everyone from walking on the grass so that it grows as strong as possible. There is only three weeks between the competitions and that will be a very tight time for the grass to recover."

The All England Club will be reducing the amount of plants around the courts to help cut back on water usage, The Daily Mirror reports.

"We are revising our planting schemes, with drought-resistant plants and some reduction in hanging baskets inside and outside the grounds. Wimbledon this year will be a little less colourful than usual but we think it's the right thing to do," said Wimbledon chairman Philip Brook. (ANI)
