Pakistan invites new Afghan Peace Council head Salahuddin Rabbani for visit

Islamabad, Fri, 20 Apr 2012 ANI

Islamabad, Apr 20(ANI): Pakistan has invited the new head of the Afghanistan High Peace Council, Salahuddin Rabbani, for a visit this year, diplomatic officials have said.

"We want engagement... that is why the invitation has been extended to Salauddin," The Express Tribune quoted a top foreign ministry official, as saying.

One official said no dates had yet been finalised for the visit, and added he was expected to visit Islamabad between July and September this year.

Salahuddin, who is the son of slain former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani, replaced his father as Afghan Peace Council head.

He is expected to meet Pakistan's top political and military leaders and key players who might have a significant role in the Afghan peace process

Burhanuddin Rabbani was assassinated by a Taliban bomber in 2011. Kabul then blamed elements within the Pakistani intelligence for the assassination. (ANI)
