Majority Americans support Obama on Buffett Rule

Washington, Sat, 14 Apr 2012 ANI

Washington, Apr 14 (ANI): US President Barack Obama has a large number of Americans on his side with the Buffett Rule, according to a new Gallup poll.

The survey released on Friday suggests that a whopping 60 percent favor the rule, while only 37 percent oppose it, Politico reports.

Some of the partisan split in the results is unsurprising: Democrats overwhelmingly support it 74 percent to 24 percent, while Republcians oppose it 54 percent to 43 percent. But what's interesting is how the independents fell. They favored the rule 63 percent to 33 percent.

But the Gallup analysis also points out that the measure, which would ensure that millionaires pay at least 30 percent of their income in taxes, has little chance of passing, Politico reports.

"Republican politicians oppose the Buffett Rule, and there is little possibility that it will become law this year. President Obama's intense focus on the policy and his emphasis on bringing it to a vote in Congress is thus mostly a symbolic gesture-underscoring his general presidential campaign themes this year," Gallup stated in the analysis, adding that it still helps Obama politically.
