Labor mayoral candidate pledges funds for annual Bollywood festival in Brisbane

Melbourne, Fri, 13 Apr 2012 ANI

Melbourne, Apr 13 (ANI): Labor lord mayoral candidate Ray Smith, has said that Brisbane will have a major Bollywood festival if his party gains control of the City Hall.

Bollywood dancers backed Smith as he pledged 30,000 dollars annually for the festival, which he said would be held from 2013 if he were elected.

"A Brisbane Bollywood festival would be a great boost for our local community," the Courier Mail quoted him as saying.

He explained that the festival would include food, dance and films.

"I have spoken to the Indian community and they are right behind it," Smith said.

However, not everyone is thrilled with the announcement.

Greens candidate for Brisbane Central Rachael Jacobs accused Smith of being 'tokenistic' as a number of Indian festivals already take place each year across the city.

Jacobs said if Smith was genuine he would increase support for the festivals that already exist. (ANI)
