London, April 12 (IANS) A university in London plans to ban alcohol from parts of its campus to attract more Muslim students.
The London Metropolitan University was considering the ban on the sale of alcohol because a "high percentage" of students consider drinking "immoral," vice chancellor Malcolm Gillies was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.
The university was founded in 2002. One-fifth of its 30,000 students are Muslims, and of those the majority are women.
It is an issue of "cultural sensitivity" to provide drink-free areas, Gillies said, adding that he was "not a great fan of alcohol on campus".
"It's a negative experience - in fact an immoral experience - for a high percentage of our students," he said.
"Many of our students do come from backgrounds where they actually look on (drinking) as a negative. And given that around our campuses you have at least half a dozen pubs within 200 metres, I can't see there is such a pressing reason to be cross-subsidising a student activity which is essentially the selling of alcohol," he said.
The vice chancellor said the university needs to be much more cautious about sex too.
