Almost 90 pct people 'stopped, frisked' by NYPD were black or Hispanic

New York, Thu, 12 Apr 2012 ANI

New York, Apr 12 (ANI): Nearly 90 percent of US citizens who were 'stopped and frisked' by New York Police Department officials in 2011 were either black or Hispanic, while just nine percent of them were white, a report has revealed.

New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's investigators are currently reviewing the NYPD's stop-and-frisk data and weighing whether to issue a formal report.

Documents obtained by The Daily News showed that the NYPD program has reached a record high 685,724 stops in 2011.

According to the report, 53 percent (350,743 people) stopped by the NYPD were black, 34 percent (223,740 people) were Latino and nine percent (61,805 people) were white, The New York Daily News reports.

The report by the New York Civil Liberties Union also found that of the record number of stops in 2011, 88 percent did not end in a criminal charge or issuance of a summons.

Schneiderman pledged in his 2010 campaign for attorney general to crack down on "unjustified stop-and-frisk practices."

According to the report, a source with knowledge of the review said a "working group" inside the attorney general's office is analyzing records of stops, including racial breakdowns of those who were subjected to the practice. (ANI)
