Residents of Kolkata, Chennai apprehensive following Indonesia quake (Lead: quake)

Kolkata/Chennai, Apr 11 (ANI): With an earthquake of 8.7 magnitude striking the western coast of Indonesia and tremors being felt in the eastern parts of India, residents of Kolkata and Chennai on Wednesday appeared to be very tense hoping that there is no loss to life or property.

Several people in Kolkata moved out of their office premises following the tremors.

"My wife works in Rajarhat; they have been asked to move out of their offices following the news. We are very tense and pray that it is not felt here," said Rahul Mukherjee, a resident of Kolkata.

""I have just listened about it. But we hope that it will not happen again because it has destroyed many lives and many things. We don't want this type of happening to take place in India or anywhere else," added Munmun Shamanta.

Another Kolkata resident D. Chatterjee hoped that would not be any major damage or loss of life.

"I haven't felt anything in Kolkata. I hope there has not been any major life loss or property loss in Indonesia. And if there has been any loss, my full sympathy is with them," he added.

Meanwhile, residents of Chennai , who felt the earthquake , expressed similar sentiments

"I was just inside my house and after lunch I was taking rest on my sofa. I felt there was some shaking " said Mani Rao, a resident of Annanagar in Chennai.

"Few seconds back, I felt the tremors. I was working on my laptop, I saw everything shaking. I thought there is some wind, but later on I came out, everybody was on the streets. It was a kind of dizzy feeling," added Jaddish, another resident.

According to reports, Indonesia has issued a tsunami warning for the whole Indian Ocean.

Tsunami warning have also been also issued for Andaman and Nicobar Islands and people living in the coastal areas have been asked to vacate the beaches. (ANI)
