China should show kindness to neighbours: Daily

Beijing, April 10 (IANS) Arguing that China's economic rise is good for the world, a Chinese commentary said Tuesday that Beijing must "show more kindness" to neighbouring countries worried about its strength.

Without naming India or Japan, the commentary in state-run People's Daily

said: "Certain people are jealous of China's strong growth momentum. China should ignore unreasonable criticism and never compromise its principles.

"As for neighbouring countries' worries about its rise, China should show more kindness and build up mutual trust with its neighbours through practical actions to promote peace and common development."

The commentary by Zhong Sheng accused "certain arrogant Westerners" of ignoring China's rise and making negative predictions about China.

"China is fully aware of its own problems, and is prepared for both predictable and unforeseen challenges," the commentary said.

"China's development is inseparable from the world, and it takes the rest of the world some time to adapt to China's rapid development."

It said that developing countries were China's "important partners, providing a strategic backing for its peaceful rise.

"Instead of seeking immediate paybacks, China should provide greater support and more assistance to developing countries that need help, and develop friendly cooperative relations with more countries.

"The further China advances on its road of peaceful development, the brighter the world's future will be."

The trade volume of China, the world's second largest economy, has surged from $500 billion to $3.6 trillion in 10 years since it joined the World Trade Organization.
