Activists accuse Assad govt. of accelerating violence in Syria

Damascus, Sun, 08 Apr 2012 ANI

Damascus, April 8 (ANI): Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been accused of accelerating violence in the country as the international ceasefire deadline looms.

According to the Independent, activists said that the Syrian Government's shootings and offensives on the rebel-held towns have killed at least 74 civilians across the country on Saturday.

Assad has accepted a ceasefire deadline, which has asked the former to pull out forces from towns and cities by Tuesday, and also asked both the government and rebels to lay down their arms by Thursday, negotiated by the international envoy Kofi Annan.

Rober Ford, the US ambassador to Syria, has said that the Syrian Government appears to have pulled back some of its forces from towns and cities, but it is still alert in some places, or has simply shifted around troops and armoured vehicles.

Ford urged the Syrian President to allow a UN monitoring force come into the country and give it rights to investigate the regime's observance with the peace plan.ccording to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a total 9,734 people, including 7,056 civilians have died in the Syrian uprising.

Syria, however, denies that the revolt is a popular uprising at all, saying instead that it is facing a foreign conspiracy by armed gangs and terrorists, who want to destroy the country. (ANI)
