Detained Gadaafi's son attacked in Libya

Tripoli, Fri, 06 Apr 2012 ANI

Tripoli, April 6 (ANI): The son of slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam, has been attacked during detention in Libya, a lawyer from the International Criminal court (ICC) said.

According to News 24, ICC defence official Xavier-Jean Keita said that Saif al-Islam, arrested on charges of crimes against humanity for trying to put down the uprising to overthrow his father in Libya last year, was physically attacked and was suffering from pain owing to no dental treatment.

Keita, acting as Saif's primary counsel and also from the ICC's office of public counsel for the defence (OPCD), did not give any details about the attack.

He also accused the Libyan authorities of depriving Gaddafi with his basic fundamental rights.

Keita said that Saif's effective representation could not be secured in a situation where the OPCD lacks the ability to carry out confidential communications and share private documents with Gaddafi on a regular basis.

According to News 24 sources, Keita also said that domestic authorities had interviewed Gaddafi without any legal representation. He also said that Gaddafi has been provided ambiguous information about the status of domestic investigations against him.

The global police agency, on Thursday, had issued alerts seeking to arrest two senior officials in Muammar Gaddafi's ousted regime on suspicion of torture and kidnapping.

A statement from the France-based body said Libya had requested help in arresting two officials identified as former interior minister Al-Senussi Alozyre and his former deputy Naser al-Mabruk, who are accused of various offences, including carrying out illegal arrests, unjustified deprivation of personal liberty and torture.

Several other Libyan officials are subject to Interpol "Red Notice" arrest requests, including the dictator's surviving sons and his former intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi, who is being held in Mauritania. (ANI)
