Congress takes on BJP over graft

New Delhi, Tue, 03 Apr 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Apr 3 (ANI): Congress has launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party for failing to act against the Gujarat Government in the wake of a Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) report revealing corruption in several dealings.

Recently, the CAG had pointed out anomalies in the distribution of surplus land and planned usage of water resources, among certain other sectors.

Urging the BJP to take action against the Gujarat Government-where it is in power-Congress party spokesperson Manish Tiwari said: "Why is there a deafening silence from the central leadership of the BJP? If they believe in the CAG report, then why have they not taken action against the Gujarat government?

" If they do not believe in the averments, which have been made in the conclusion, which have been arrived at, then why do not they have the courage to stand up and say so?" he asked

Tiwari also clarified the Congress' stand on the differences of opinion between veteran anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare's aides and the government of Himachal Pradesh over the Lokayukta Bill.

"The double standards of the BJP, as evidenced by their conduct in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on the Lokpal Bill are all in the public domain. If the Himachal government, which is a BJP-ruled government, chooses to go down the same path, I do not think it is something, which is very different from the conduct, which they have exhibited in the centre," said Tiwari.

Earlier, media reports said the Himachal Pradesh government had cancelled a meeting with Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal after he termed the draft of the state Lokpal Bill 'very weak and ineffective.'

Himachal Pradesh has drafted Lokayukta bill 2012, to give more teeth to the anti-graft body. (ANI)
